Courses in Health Activism for College & Medical Students:
Public Citizen has helped promote the development of courses in health activism. Their website (click here) provides model courses as well as links to courses that are offered at 13 schools around the United States.
This site has postings about the social medicine courses at Emory University School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. You can also download the syllabus of the Tulane Medical School Course called Advocating for Health.
And, of course, we cannot forget the Albert Einstein student-run course in Social Medicine.
Fellowship Opportunities
The Open Society Institute (OSI) of the Soros Foundation offers fellowships for practitioners and has an interest in health. In the past (1999-2007) they funded a fellowship for physician activists. Read more about this in our posting.
International Opportunities
The O.C Hubert Student Fellowship in International Health is administered by the CDC Foundation. From their website: “Established in 1999, the fellowship provides an opportunity for third- and fourth-year medical and veterinary students to gain public health experience in an international setting. Hubert fellows spend six to twelve weeks in a developing country working on a priority health problem in conjunction with CDC staff.”
The Fogarty Center at the NIH also publishes a list of grants and fellowships in the global health sciences. The most recent update of this valuable resource was in 2006.
