Capital Punishment: A New Posting From Public Health and Social Justice
As one whose husband and mother-in-law have died the victims of murder … I stand firmly and unequivocally opposed to the death penalty … An evil deed is not redeemed by an evil deed of retaliation. Justice is never advanced in the taking of a human life. Morality is never upheld by a legalized murder.” – Corretta Scott King
With the recent executions in Washington and Virginia, the U.S. has now put to death 39 individuals this year. For those interested in learning more about the history and current use of the death penalty, the public health and social justice website open-access slide show on capital punishment has just been updated. Available at http://phsj.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/Capital-Punishment1.ppt, the Powerpoint presentation covers historical and contemporary methods of capital punishment, death row epidemiology, case law regarding the death penalty, and ethical issues relevant to the role of physicians in executions. As always, feedback and corrections are welcome.
