Hi Matt
Unfortunately this travesty will not be resolved until the WHO Code for the Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes is ratified by legislation - we have the same problem in Australia.

The Australian Parliament has a report tabled last August, awaiting a response re breastfeeding. One of it's 22 recommendations is to legislate the WHO Code.

During the public meetings of the initial inquiry, one multi-national formula manufacturer stated that they would be prepared to go as far as the Supreme Court to fight the introduction of such legislation - just as they did recently in the Philippines.

It will take global action to curtail such actions.

Cheers

Dr. Anderson--wonderful points! Thanks for bringing this issue to light. Thankfully, Harlem Hospital in recent weeks has become the first Baby Friendly Hospital in New York City. Let's hope this is the start of a trend across NYC hospitals--a trend that will require the full advocacy effort of physicians caring for women and children. I believe we can make the difference in seeing Baby Friendly hospitals become a reality for more hospitals across the country.

this is absoultely shameless, I try constantly to try and say that the occasional drug company pen doesn't sway me but direct advertising to patients are the problem and this takes the cake as it violates both ideals. If the FDA was really serios they would prohibit direct advertisinfg to patients as well as marketing subsidizing medical education.

Thank you Dr. Anderson for bringing this matter to our attention.

We should all take a good look at the patient education materials appearing in our offices.

Happy World Breastfeeding Week!
